Is Invisaligm a Treatment Alternative for Malocclusions?
A malocclusion describes a condition where teeth are not properly aligned between the upper and lower jaw. There are many reasons why this may occur, and many different treatment options to correct it. One of the most popular options available are the Invisalign clear plastic aligners.
When Invisalign was introduced many years ago, it was thought that many malocclusions would not be suitable for this method of teeth straightening. But throughout the years that thought process has been shelved and many more patients with a cross bite, over bite or under bite have benefited with Invisalign.
A visit with your dentist will determine if your particular malocclusion makes you a candidate for Invisalign. Photographs, x-rays and dental impressions are taken to be sent to the Invisalign laboratory. With 3-D digital technology, a series of clear, soft plastic aligners are developed.
As with any method of teeth straightening, an assessment is made to determine the best option for the patient. The extraction of teeth may be required to make room for remaining teeth to shift into their correct position. Quite often a malocclusion is created due to lack of jaw space for all teeth to grow in properly.
With Invisalign aligners, the patient will replace the upper and/or lower aligners every couple of weeks with the next in the series. With each change, the teeth are gently being shifted to the proper bite. Since the aligners are removable, the patient and dental provider can easily visualize the changes taking place.
With removable aligners, there are many other advantages:
- Patients can continue to eat the foods they love with no diet restrictions.
- Excellent oral hygiene habits of daily flossing and brushing is much easier.
- The twice yearly professional cleaning and exam allows the dentist to keep plaque build-up in check helping to prevent the onset of dental decay or gum disease.
- For patients who wear a mouth guard during any sport or activity, it is easy to replace the aligner with the mouth guard and switch back again.
Abrasions from metal wires and brackets are also eliminated.
Many malocclusions are treatable with Invisalign, but the patient must adhere to daily wearing of twenty to twenty-two hours per day to achieve the desired outcome in the prescribed time frame.
