Invisalign: What happens after treatment is completed?

shutterstock_69850930 (Custom)Traditionally, the orthodontic experience is filled with a series of highs and lows. There is the joy of having your braces put on, followed by the low period of living with brackets and wires and rubber bands, followed by the high of finally getting your braces removed. With the active orthodontic phase completed, most patients move on to the retention phase in which metal and acrylic retainers will be required, some of which are permanently glued to the backsides of the teeth.

With Invisalign, however, your experience begins on a high note and ends in much the same fashion. Of course, you will enjoy a metal-free orthodontic experience during the active phase of your care. You will be fitted with removable aligners that are barely noticeable and surprisingly comfortable. You will be permitted to remove your aligners during meals and also during brushing or flossing, from the first day of your treatment until the last day.

Finally, when your treatment is completed, the retention phase will meet the same high expectations as the active phase. To prevent the teeth from returning to their previous positions, long-term retention will be required. However, your retainers will be very similar to the aligners of the active phase, and they won’t present any inconvenience in your everyday life.

Just like your aligners, your retainers will be made from a high-quality, clear plastic that slips over the teeth and can be removed as needed. Your dentist will advise you as to when the retainers should be worn and for how long. Since there is a natural tendency for the teeth to shift (even after Invisalign), it is imperative that you adhere to your dentist’s instructions regarding your retainers. Your efforts will preserve the progress that was achieved and prevent a relapse that would warrant additional treatment.

Orthodontic treatment can provide lifelong benefits. Your commitment and cooperation are essential to the long-term success of your treatment.
