Invisalign

Touted as one of the most comfortable and discreet ways to straighten teeth, Invisalign has revolutionized the way that dentists and orthodontists approach orthodontic treatment. Since Invisalign is discreet, it is ideal for adults and teenagers. In fact, Invisalign is virtually unnoticeable to others.

This orthodontic system can address common problems like crooked, crowded, gapped and overlapped teeth along with malocclusions such as overbites and underbites without the need for fixed orthodontic appliances like brackets or wires.

How Invisalign Works

Like traditional metal and wire braces, Invisalign moves teeth by creating consistent pressure. The application of pressure to teeth is what facilitates their movement over time. The difference between traditional orthodontia and Invisalign is the materials used to shift teeth. Unlike brackets which are professionally bonded over teeth and connected by wires, Invisalign utilizes a retainer-like appliance called an aligner. An aligner is made from plastic and is worn over the teeth. Aligners are custom made to fit a person’s mouth and fit snugly over the teeth. This is what generates the force and pressure needed to shift the positioning of teeth over time.

An aligner or set of aligners is worn for two weeks. Then, a patient discards their aligners and receives a new, tighter set. Each subsequent set of aligners is tighter and more form fitting than the set worn previously. Over the course of treatment, the tightness of aligners will create gradual and effective teeth movement.

How Invisalign Is Different

Since Invisalign utilizes different materials than traditional orthodontia to move teeth, those receiving treatment enjoy some distinct benefits. Aside from appearing very inconspicuous, most patients agree that Invisalign is more comfortable than metal and wire braces because the plastic from which aligners are made will not scrape against or cut into soft oral tissue. Another benefit of Invisalign is the fact that aligners can be taken out of the mouth unlike traditional braces, which are cemented to teeth by brackets. Since aligners are removable, patients can practice optimal oral hygiene and eat meals without obstruction.

Benefits Of Treatment

Receiving orthodontic treatment has more benefits than just improving the way a smile looks. Aligning teeth to straighter positions is advantageous to oral health, too. Straight teeth tend to be much healthier than teeth that are overlapped, crowded and crooked because cleaning teeth that are properly spaced and upright is easier. If patients brush and floss as instructed after orthodontic treatment, they typically have much lower risks for developing periodontal disease and cavities.

If you would like to straighten your smile discreetly and wonder if Invisalign is right for you, we invite you to reserve a consultation with Dr. Christian. At your appointment, Dr. Christian will look at the positioning of your teeth, perform an oral examination and take X-rays to determine if Invisalign is the best orthodontic treatment for you.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Invisalign is an orthodontic system that uses removable oral appliances made from plastic. These retainer-like devices are custom made to fit over a person’s teeth to provide the necessary pressure and force to create tooth movement. Invisalign is clear and removable. This means that not only is treatment discreet, it is convenient for practicing oral hygiene and eating.

This orthodontic system was invented specifically for those in need of discreet and comfortable treatment. Since becoming available to the public in 2000, Invisalign has helped millions of people achiever straighter and healthier smiles worldwide.

If you have gapped, crowded, overlapped, and crooked teeth, Invisalign may be a great treatment option for you. Those with overbites and underbites can benefit from wearing Invisalign as well. Although Invisalign is great for many people, it is not right for everyone. The best way to determine what treatment is best for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Christian. If conventional orthodontia is needed, our practice will refer you to a trusted and capable orthodontist.

The cost of Invisalign fluctuates based on the length of a person’s treatment. Patients who only need minor orthodontic correction will likely have a shorter treatment time and subsequently pay less than a patient with more severe orthodontic problems. Since Invisalign improves oral health and quality of life, we encourage patients to view this type of treatment as a long-term investment. By having healthier teeth, that are easier to keep clean, you can prevent conditions that can become costly to treat – especially advanced tooth decay and gum disease.

Treatment times for those receiving Invisalign vary depending on the positioning and alignment of their teeth. Some people, with minimal issues, may wear Invisalign for about eight months while others with more pronounced orthodontic problems might need a year or more of treatment. Overall, however, Invisalign treatment is typically faster than conventional orthodontics.
