Probiotics May Boost Oral Health

yogurt-probiotic-nonfat-blended-70864If yogurt sales are any indication, Americans have accepted the idea that probiotic foods – those that contain beneficial bacteria – can improve health. But “good” bacteria don’t just live in the digestive system. Now, one company has developed a probiotic mint that can promote optimal oral health.

The human mouth teems with bacteria. But contrary to popular belief, not all of those bacteria are to blame for bad breath and tooth decay. Good bacteria actually promote better oral health – they keep gums healthy and breath fresh. It’s only when “bad” bacteria overpopulate the mouth that mouth odor, tooth decay and gum disease occur.

Antibacterial mouthwashes and breath fresheners can worsen the problem. They destroy all bacteria, good and bad. Any surviving bad bacteria quickly repopulate the mouth, creating more odor.

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, an overpopulation of bad bacteria in the mouth can cause system-wide inflammation, contributing to serious problems like cardiovascular disease. Consumers who use antibacterial mouthwashes, and have bad breath, feel under stress, and who eat fast food more than once a week prove especially susceptible to oral disease.

Improving oral health can decrease a person’s risk for developing problems like heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and diabetes. But what is the most effective way to improve oral health?

Dr. Jeffrey Hillman, DMD, Ph.D., who has spent more than 25 years researching oral health, has identified three unique probiotic strains that are natural residents in very healthy mouths. This special blend of probiotics, patented as ProBiora3, forms colonies of beneficial bacteria on the teeth and gums, where they crowd out harmful bacteria.

These beneficial bacteria naturally support optimal gum and tooth health, freshen breath and, by releasing a continuous, low-dose of hydrogen peroxide, gently whiten teeth.

The ProBiora3 probiotic technology has been integrated into an easy delivery system as a probiotic mint in a product called EvoraPlus. For more information, visit www.myevoraplus.com.
