How to select the right toothbrush

When was the last time you purchased a new toothbrush?  If you can’t remember, I would recommend going to the store to get a new one.

The store can be overwhelming with choices and that’s why I have dedicated this week’s post to helping you find the best toothbrush!

It’s amazing to think about the fact not too long ago the choices for toothbrush varieties were minimal.  Almost everyone used the same type of brush.  These days that’s not the case and for a good reason!  Our mouths and teeth are all different shapes and sizes so it’s best to find a brush that will suit your needs.

It’s important to keep in mind the size of your brush head.  There are typically small, medium and large options. Based off of your mouth size, pick a brush that has bristles that will cover most of the tooth when you are brushing.

It’s also important to get a brush with bristles that suit your brushing needs.  If you are like me and brush fairly hard, getting a soft bristled brush will be imperative.  If you are a delicate brusher, your teeth and gums might be able to withstand a more medium to hard bristle.  Whichever option you choose, make sure you aren’t brushing your teeth too hard.  Both your teeth and your gums can be damaged because of this over time.

Now for the choice of electric versus manual.  This is also a personal choice and can be narrowed down due to cost and style.  We here at Dallas Dental Concierge love the Sonicare toothbrush line.  Because of the vibrating style of the brush along with the action of the bristles moving while you brush, your teeth get an extra clean feeling!  It’s also a nice massage for your gums.  The most important thing is that you are brushing your teeth twice a day so whether it’s electric or manual, just make sure you have a routine.

Lastly, select the color and style that suits you.  There are various styles and colors among the world of brushes so as long as the head size is correct, the bristles aren’t too harsh and you’ve selected your category of manual versus electric, the color and actual style is up to you.  There’s no right or wrong answer.
