Tooth Replacement Options: Complete or Partial Denture

In recent years the world of dentistry has made much advancement allowing a patient that has suffered one or more lost teeth multiple choices to match their budgetary and aesthetic needs. Partial dentures are selected when you need to replace one or a couple of teeth in the upper or lower arch. A complete denture will be fashioned if replacing all teeth is needed in either arch.

When tooth loss occurs it is important to replace the missing teeth quickly to help prevent remaining teeth from drifting toward the open space. Problems with occlusion due to a misaligned bite can lead to additional issues with chewing, grinding and clenching.

When being fitted with a partial denture, your dentist will take x-rays, photographs and dental impressions so the dental lab will be able to fabricate the denture to closely match the shape and shade of surrounding teeth.

When the denture is returned from the lab, it is tried in and adjusted to offer the patient the most comfortable and correct fit possible. Over the first few days of wearing your new dental appliance, it might be necessary to visit your dental office for adjustments. This is normal. It is very important that you do not attempt to make adjustments on your own. What you consider a little tweak could cause more harm than good.

Proper care will help extend the life of your denture. A removable partial should be cleaned daily with a mild soap or a paste designed for this purpose. Using a soft bristle brush and the correct cleaner will keep your denture clean and void of the scratches that can occur if using abrasive tooth paste or a firm brush.

Brushing and flossing your natural remaining teeth without the denture in place will help to stimulate the gum tissue and help keep dental decay in check.

Visiting your dental provider twice a year for a professional cleaning and exam will help ensure that you will maximize the life of your denture and maintain the healthiest teeth and smile possible.
